As the only player to tour four times with the Kangaroos, and the only player to make two tours as captain, Mal was an obvious choice to lead the Kangaroos again as coach.
The NRL engaged Mal as head coach of the Kangaroos in December 2015, and he has held the role ever since. As coach, he led the Kangaroos to win the 2017 World Cup.
Mal also coached the Queensland rugby league side for a decade, leading the team through their most successful period in history.
